In the past, I created New Year’s resolutions. But I confess… like many people I would fall off the band wagon for a variety of reasons. This year I am choosing a word for the year. To me it is more of a guiding light. If you’re a Hyper-Achiever like me, a “word” is easier and kinder to yourself than setting a resolution.
Resolutions often feel rigid and unforgiving. A single word offers flexibility and grace. It becomes a North Star—a reminder of the energy, focus, or mindset you wish to cultivate.
My word for the year is self-compassion. I had some challenging health issues at the end of 2024. I wasn’t sleeping enough. I was walking around like a zombie – brain fog, tiredness, irritability. I kept pushing myself until I finally got some help.
You’d think I’d learn after being a two time heart attack survivor! I realized I needed to slow down, listen to my body, and treat myself with the same kindness I extend to others.
Self-compassion will serve as my gentle guide as I move through the coming year. It will encourage me to prioritize my well-being without guilt or judgment. I’ll put my oxygen mask on first as I continue in my own heart attack recovery.
Now, I’d love to help you discover your word for the year. Here’s how to get started.
Why Choose a Word for the Year?
Focus Over Friction:
Instead of the rigidity of a resolution, a single word provides the intention for the year. It is the guiding light to move toward. It’s not about doing more and checking boxes that may not matter. But it is about being aligned with your intention.
Adaptability:
Life is unpredictable, and goals can shift. A word evolves with you, providing a consistent anchor no matter what the year holds.
Empowerment:
Your word acts as a lens through which you see your choices and actions. It empowers you to make decisions that align with your values.
Put Your Word into Practice
Choosing your word is just the beginning. Here are some ways to weave it into your daily life:
Mindfulness Reminders:
Set phone alerts, sticky notes, or visual cues to remind you of your word. I created a graphic of my word. I used Canva which is a free graphic tool that is a lot of fun to use. I printed it out and have it on my desk. I think it turned out rather nicely.
Morning Reflection:
Start each day by asking, “How can I embody my word today?” For me, if I’m not feeling 100%, I’m reminded to take it slow and show self-compassion.
Journaling:
If you like to write, use your word as a prompt. For example, if your word is gratitude, think of the small things right now that you can be grateful for.
Celebrate Small Wins:
I’ve been so guilty of not doing this more! Acknowledge the moments when you’ve lived in alignment with your word. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.
Your Turn
What word will you choose to guide your year? Take some time to reflect, and don’t rush the process. When you find your word, I’d love to hear about it!
Feel free to share it in the comments or reply to this email. Let’s support each other in making this year one of intention and transformation.
